Following the Revolutionary War, Congress was deeply in debt. The state of North Carolina, also in financial distress due to wars with the Cherokee and other Native American tribes, ceded 29 million acres west of the Allegheny Mountains to the Federal Government. Shortly before full secession was to take place North Carolina rescinded its gift, fearing that the land would be sold to Spain or France. Feeling neglected, the settlers of that region declared a new and independent state.
The State of Franklin, named after Benjamin Franklin and the original birth state of Davey Crockett, was officially created in 1784 and would establish its own leaders, laws and court systems. After four years the State of Franklin was forced to settle its political differences with North Carolina due to severe attacks from the Cherokee, Chickamauga and Chickasaw Nations. A few years later what was the short-lived State of Franklin became what is now known as Eastern Tennessee. The State of Franklin Collection honors the history of this region while working to preserve our future.
